A Woodworking Wonder: Anthony’s Creative Outlet
Anthony in Derby has been perfecting his woodworking craft for the past 15 years, since he started at school. From his first project to his most recent, he talks us through the joy of creating artwork and how much he loves his weekly woodworking sessions at The Workshop.
How did you get into woodworking?
I started at school. My first project I made was a boomerang, from there I made a K9 from Doctor Who which I finished at The Workshop. I also did my own project with Lego which got me started. I’ve been woodworking for about 15 years now.
How do you feel when you’re working on a project and creating something?
I feel happy and determined to get something done when it’s challenging. I like doing challenging projects.
What’s been the most challenging project you’ve worked on?
The doll’s house I made for my mum because it took the longest. I was creating individual bricks and roof tiles to perfect it. It took me four years, some of that included COVID-19 and The Workshop sent me the wood to work on it in my flat. It opens down the middle and the roof also opens up. Inside, you’ll find a fireplace and an Aga oven so it’s like an old-fashioned house.
What are you working on at the moment?
I most recently finished a bird house and donated it to the raffle at the Pine Court Summer Fair.
What are some of the key skills you’ve gained over the years?
I struggle with hand-coordination dyslexia so I think I’ve got better with my hands and my coordination. I used to struggle when using the coping saw and I’ve got better with that over the years. The steadier hands have improved my art too.
What do you love about creating your artworks?
I love going to The Workshop, seeing my friends and doing challenging things. I make things for family and it makes them proud of me, and the things I make them make them happy.
Has there been a particular mentor or staff member who’s really helped you?
Craig who works at The Workshop and Lorna, one of the Support Workers at Pine Court, helps me a lot. Lorna especially helped me with the doll’s house project during COVID-19 when I could only do woodworking in my flat.
What’s your advice for anyone thinking of trying a new hobby?
Just give it a try. It’s fun, you can create anything you want – it can be easy or challenging. It’s fun to do and meet new people, make new friends and have fun. There’s help there if you need it.
