Bedford’s Jamaican Carnival

Bedford’s Jamaican Carnival

60 people we support and staff from across our Bedford services came together for a Carnival to celebrate their Jamaican community.

The inspiration came from two people we support. Jennie wanted to honour her Jamaican heritage, while Del dreamed of visiting Jamaica one day after learning about its vibrant culture.

When Creative Support launched its ‘Summer of Fun’ grants, our Bedford services saw the perfect opportunity to bring their idea to life and applied for the Grand Prize.

The team was awarded £800. Some serious planning followed led by people we support, staff, and management. They chose the last day of August for their Carnival. It was a roaring success.

The garden at the hosting service was transformed with balloon arches, island-themed décor, and a tent in the corner for the live music. Traditional Jamaican food sizzled on the BBQ. The delicious menu included jerk chicken, stewed chicken, rice and peas, jollof rice, soft-blended meals, gluten-free and halal choices.

Support Worker Val, the chef for the day, said, “I was honoured to be asked to cook and share my heritage.”

Beside the incredible food, another highlight was a live steel drum performance from Steelasophical, a DJ and steel drummer whose infectious rhythms had everyone dancing.

“I did the conga line,” said Philip.

“I was wobbling!” added Del (his personal way of saying he was grooving on the dancefloor.)

When a sudden rain shower tried to dampen the mood, the Carnival simply moved indoors, with people dancing in the corridors until the sun reappeared.

For those who preferred a quieter atmosphere, a Carnival mask-making table and a sensory lounge offered space to chat, get creative, or recharge. Some reconnected with old friends, others stepped outside their comfort zones to try something new like inflatable limbo.

Barry, a newer member of the community, was pleased to make some friends, while Andrew said, “It’s so good to reconnect with old friends.”

At the centre of it all was Jennie smiling, dancing, and loving every moment of the celebration she helped inspire.

“Everyone keeps asking: ‘What’s next?’ That’s how I know we did something truly special. This is what outstanding care looks and feels like, “smiled Registered Manager Emily.
