Volunteer Activity Assistant – Healthy Cooking Group (Job Ref: 18861)

Position Categories: Full Time, London, new, Voluntary

Location: East Finchley, London

Salary: Voluntary

Closing Date: 13 September 2018

Short Job Description:

About the Service: Lingwood Court is a supported living service for ten adults aged 38-64 with a learning disability. The building is spacious and has large communal areas for the tenants to enjoy, including a kitchen, dining area and a big garden.

The tenants are a great group of people who have varying support needs, although, overall they can be described as fairly independent. Some of them are in full-time employment, some part-time volunteering and almost all of them are attending some kind of day centre or recreational activity on a regular basis. As they have all lived at Lingwood Court for a long time, they know each other really well and enjoy good relationships with one another. We would like to build on these bonds by running more group activities in the evenings.

Purpose of the role: At Lingwood Court we encourage our tenants to lead independent, healthy lifestyles, but a challenge we face is the dependence they have on junk food. Despite prompts from staff, visits to the GP and regular communications about the negative effects this diet can have on their physical and mental health, the majority of people living at the service continue to eat ready-meals, sugary/salty snacks and fizzy drinks.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, friendly volunteer to lead a healthy cooking group with the aim of supporting our tenants to cook at least one healthy meal a week in the communal kitchen. As a volunteer, you will help tenants choose the menu and encourage people to get involved with the cookery session.

The aim of this role is to show everyone at Lingwood Court how successful a healthy diet can be. We hope that by holding this session once a week we will encourage great physical and mental health in our residents and give them the knowledge and confidence to cook their own healthy meals throughout the week.

As a volunteer you will use your passion for healthy cooking to lead a fun cookery session where you will empower our tenants to make healthy choices and eat nutritious food. Staff will be available to support if needed and are available 24 hours a day. This is a fantastic, rewarding opportunity for someone with a love of healthy cooking who would like to use their skills to improve the wellbeing of adults in their local community.

Suggested Time Commitment: This is a flexible opportunity that could take place any evening of the week (apart from a Monday or Friday). Volunteers can choose which evening they would like to volunteer and would need to be available from 4:00pm-7:00pm on their chosen day of volunteering.
