Short Job Description:

About the Service: Creative Support has successfully applied for funding from the Wigan Community Investment Fund (The Deal) to develop an innovative peer support service which will complement our existing housing and community support service, Wigan Wellbeing and Resilience Service. Wigan Peer to Peer Support is a three year project providing step-down support for our clients, and low intensity support for the Wigan community, through a variety of peer support methods.

This support provision will enable both mentors and mentees to gain confidence, new skills and opportunities, whilst increasing social connectivity. The service will be reliant on the input of volunteers. Reflecting our service users, we look to recruit volunteers who have lived experience of mental health related needs, addiction and histories of offending, or those who can utilise the strength gained from their own experiences to support clients on their journey to recovery.

Purpose of the role: Peer Support Volunteers will provide an essential and unique role within the Wigan Wellbeing and Resilience Service. With a lived experience of mental health related needs, addiction recovery or offending, they will feel confident in using their personal experience and knowledge to offer advice and guidance to others.

The Peer Support Coordinator will match successful Peer Support Volunteers with service users who would most benefit from their particular knowledge and personal experiences. You will meet with the service user on a regular basis to help them identify goals and help work towards these to support their continued personal development.

There is a range of different ways you can get involved with the project and provide support, and there is some flexibility in how this can be achieved. You will be able to meet the individual you’re supporting either on a one-to-one basis, in a group or activity. Peer support could also be telephone-based on occasion.

The majority of peer support placements will be expected to last 3 months, with a maximum time limit of 6 months. We recognise that providing peer support can be emotionally challenging for the volunteer and we ensure you are properly supported by offering relevant training and regular supervisions with your supervisor.

We also offer peer support specific training that is designed to equip you with the necessary skills for being a peer mentor.

This role is open to people not accessing the service with personal experience of mental ill health and ex-service users who have not accessed the service for at least six months.

Suggested Time Commitment: We would suggest a minimum time commitment of one hour per week.
