Position Categories: Autism, new, South East, Voluntary

Location: Reading

Salary: Volunteering

Closing Date: 19 March 2018

Other Job Ref Numbers: 18955CRJ

Short Job Description:

About the Service: Creative Support offer several support services across Berkshire, where we assist adults with learning disabilities, mental health needs and older people with mobility and memory difficulties. Our support ranges from a few hours each week to 24 hour assistance. Many of our residents are very active in the community and take part in clubs and trips with the support of staff.

Our Autism specific service in Reading supports 5 young adults with varying degrees of autism, requiring varying needs of support. Despite the majority of our residents in this service being fairly independent they would benefit from the support of Volunteer Befriender’s to assist them on their day to day activities in the community.

Purpose of the role: As a Volunteer Befriender & Community Enabler you will assist our residents with autism to access their local community, encourage them to make new social connections and support them in travel planning and using public transport. Your support will mean they get the most out of their trips in the community and have a positive, less daunting experience when trying new things.

Our service users also greatly enjoy taking part in the trips and events Creative Support organise. As a befriender and community enabler your support will ensure all service users get the most out of these experiences, as you will be able to accompany the more independent residents while staff support less independent service users with more complex needs.

The activities and service user you will be accompanying will vary greatly, and although we will do our best to match volunteers with a service user who shares similar interests this may not always be possible. Examples of the types of activities you may accompany a service user to include visiting a leisure centre, supporting on a day trip to the seaside, or simply visiting local shops. This is a fantastic, rewarding and varied role which will allow a volunteer to take part in a range of activities and get to know a variety of service users.

Suggested Time Commitment: The role is available between 9.00 – 5.00 on either a Saturday or Sunday, and hours will vary depending on the activity the volunteer is accompanying the service user to.
