Volunteer Befriender (Job Ref: 18642)

Position Categories: Mental Health, Midlands, new, Voluntary

Location: Birmingham

Salary: Volunteering

Closing Date: 23 January 2018

Other Job Ref Numbers: 18642CRJ

Short Job Description:

About the Service: Birmingham Hub and Spoke services provide mental health focused, day recovery services for adults over the age of 18, who are registered with a Birmingham GP and have a diagnosis of a mental health related condition.

We have two Hubs in Birmingham, one is located in central Birmingham and the other is situated in the Northfield area of the city. This role will be based at the Northfield Hub. The hubs are spacious, with catering facilities, activity rooms and smaller rooms for one-to-one support.

The service aims to improve and maintain the mental wellbeing of our service users who are known as “members” within the service. Our members have access to one to one support from a named support worker during key working sessions in our Hubs, a timetable of activities including art, cooking, music, gardening and mental health management sessions and social opportunities through our network of community based groups known as “spokes”.

Purpose of the role: The role of a befriender is to reduce isolation and enable people to engage more with their local community. This is essential to increase confidence in service users who find travelling and/or route planning difficult, promoting independence. There is also the hope that volunteer befrienders will enable service users to access meaningful activities and contribute to the service user’s recovery of mental health difficulties, to help them feel able to move on with their lives.

Suggested Time Commitment: Applicants will need to be able to commit to one hour every week or fortnight. Volunteer shifts will take place between 9:00am-5:00pm Monday – Friday.
