Short Job Description:

About the Service: Breakthrough is a drop in centre, based in Manchester City Centre, for people with mental health needs, learning disabilities and other support needs. Our facilities include a cafe, lots of activity sessions, tuition, computers, parties, events and trips.

We are open five days a week, with a tempting selection of freshly prepared meals, available for both Breakthrough members and Creative Support staff. Located in the city centre, it’s the perfect place to take a break from the busy bustle and enjoy a cup of tea and take in the friendly atmosphere. Open from 10am until 4pm our Cyber Cafe also hosts four computers with Internet access for members to browse the web and hone their IT skills. We also run weekend trips and evening events.

Purpose of the role: As part of Breakthrough’s commitment to skills-based development we’re looking to recruit a volunteer who can support our staff in developing our service users’ Basic English and Maths skills. We support adults with a range of needs and many of them struggle with basic arithmetic and reading. As part of this role you’ll work with service users in groups and one-to-one to develop their skills and confidence.

We don’t expect volunteers to provide structured training; the sessions will be informal with a focus on practical skills and learning. Staff working at Breakthrough will support you to develop appropriate resources and with planning and group-work.

Suggested Time Commitment: We would like volunteers to commit to about 2 hours per week. Volunteer shifts will take place between 9:00am-4:00pm Monday – Friday.
