Position Categories: new, North West, Voluntary

Location: Manchester

Salary: Volunteering

Closing Date: 15 January 2018

Other Job Ref Numbers: 18608CRJ

Short Job Description:

About the Service: Breakthrough is a drop in centre, based in Manchester City Centre, for people with mental health needs, learning disabilities and other support needs. Our facilities include a cafe, lots of activity sessions, tuition, computers, parties, events and trips.

We are open five days a week, with a tempting selection of freshly prepared meals, available for both Breakthrough members and Creative Support staff. Located in the city centre, it’s the perfect place to take a break from the busy bustle and enjoy a cup of tea and take in the friendly atmosphere. Open from 10am until 4pm the Cyber Cafe also hosts four computers with Internet access for members to browse the web and hone their IT skills. We also run weekend trips and evening events.

Purpose of the role: The role of a befriender is to reduce isolation and enable people to engage more with their local community. This is essential to increase confidence in service users who find travelling and/or route planning difficult, promoting independence. There is also the hope that volunteer befrienders will enable service users to access meaningful activities and contribute to their mental wellbeing, helping them feel able to progress and live more independently.

As a Volunteer Befriender, you will provide companionship and support our service users in increasing their confidence in accessing their local community. As many of our service users find route planning and using public transport challenging, you will assist them in researching places to go and ways to travel there. This could include choosing an art exhibition they would like to see in the city, or trying out a café they haven’t been to before.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with great interpersonal skills to make a positive difference to the lives of the people we support.

Suggested Time Commitment: Applicants will need to be able to commit to one hour every week or fortnight. Volunteer shifts will take place between 10:00am-4:00pm Monday – Friday.
