Health Promotion Campaign

As part of Creative Support’s Health Promotion Campaign the Health Promnotion Team are encouraging people to stay active, eat healthier and be mindul of their health and wellbeing.

Getting started:

Before you start:

  • The majority of people can carry out exercise with no problems. If you are generally well and do not suffer from heart, bone or joint problems you can gradually build more activity into your life without talking to your doctor.
  • If you have been inactive for a long time, please take things slowly. Build things up and take plenty of ‘rest days.’
  • If you have had an illness or have any worries about your health you will need to speak to your GP.

**If you are exercising and feel any chest pain or any pain/tingling in your arms stop immediately. Talk to your support worker about how you are feeling**

  • Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and are able to move freely in.
  • Wear any shoes or trainers that are comfortable and provide good support. You don’t want any blisters…ouch!

Some Tips for success:

  • Always be aware of how your body feels and don’t push it too far. Physical activity is not meant to be painful.
  • Gradually build up your activity to a total of 30 minutes a day. You don’t have to do it all in one go to get the benefits – two sessions of 15 minutes is just as good.
  • Try to incorporate physical activity into your everyday routine by increasing your daily step count. You could do this by taking the stairs instead of the lift, getting off the bus a stop earlier, or leaving the car at home for short journeys. See ‘Our 6 tips for getting 10,000 steps blog post’ for more ideas.
  • It’s important to stretch your muscles before and after any exercise – See this link for warm up and cool down- https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/how-to-warm-up.aspx
  • It can be more fun to take part in physical activity with your support worker or friends.
