World Mental Health Day – Variety Show
Smashing the stigma of mental illness was the aim of our special variety show in Manchester last night.
Creative Support marked World Mental Health Day with a performance by service users. The event was held at The Frog and Bucket comedy club in Manchester and over a hundred of our service users, family, friends and staff from as far away as Birmingham attended.
The line-up included a singers, musicians and a magician, with a special appearance from Creative Support’s service user and staff band, Breakthrough Rocks. There was a special guest appearance from Nathan Richard Smith of Manchester Actor’s Company, who introduced the acts.
The variety show was a chance for service users to show off their talents and raise awareness of mental health issues.
Matthew, a service user who showed off his amazing card tricks at the event, said:
“it was the first time I had performed magic in front of so many. The best part of the night when I received my certificate from [Creative Support Chief Executive] Anna Lunts. I also liked giving a speech and listening to what everyone else had to say.”
World Mental Health Day is a yearly event celebrated on October 10 around the world. The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health and Older Adults’.
