5-a-side Football Tournament 2013 – News and Photos
On Saturday 18th May, service users and staff headed to Wigan, the home of the 2013 FA Cup winners, for Creative Support’s annual 5-a-side football tournament.
Before kick-off, Pete Baldwin from PB Personal Training led a warm-up session to get the teams ready for the games ahead.
This year, 24 teams participated in the tournament, which started with group stages on six pitches and then progressed to the knockout rounds before four teams made it to the cup and shield finals.
AC Alittlesilhouetteofaman, made up of players from head office, eventually won the cup after a tense battle with Vic Vale Vikings from Cumbria. Middlesbrough took home the shield after facing Osborne Road Superstars from Manchester in the final.
At the end of the tournament, players from Wigan Athletic Ladies Football Club (WALFC) presented Player of the Match trophies to Stuart from Osborne Road Superstars and Simon from AC Alittlesilhouetteofaman.
Heather Gallagher from WALFC said:
“All the players have been superb, there’s a lot of talent here. Everyone was so enthusiastic. Well done to everyone.”
Sam Chappell and Caroline Charlton from Liverpool Ladies FC presented Middlesbrough with the shield and AC Alittlesilhouetteofaman with the cup. The winning players also took home a medal to mark their achievement. Every player in the tournament also went away with a badge to say that they had taken part.
“My highlight of the day has been watching the two finals. There were some quality goals in there! It’s great to see everyone so happy.”
“I’d encourage everyone to keep working hard and keep moving.”
After the presentation, there was a raffle with lots of fantastic prizes. Service users, staff and supporters raised £101 for the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability.
