Two Years Working at Creative Support
My name is Natasha Kirby and today is my two year anniversary working at Creative Support! I am the Marketing Assistant based at head office. I started working in the organisation as an apprentice and really didn’t know what to expect – it’s my first job and I was only 18 years old. I remember on my first day asking permission to go to the toilet and the reply was “Natasha, you can go to the toilet whenever you like, you don’t have to ask”. My first day was also my first (and not last) experience of Krispy Kreme donuts. As nervous as I was I have never met a nicer bunch of people, I was made to feel really welcome and I settled in straight away.
On my first week it was the Creative Support 20th Anniversary, a huge celebration held in the Palace Hotel attended by hundreds of people. This was a little daunting as I didn’t really know anyone within the company and was so nervous about meeting so many staff and service users after such a short time (3 days!). Like they say, its always best to be dropped in the deep end … but I had a fantastic night, it was a great way to see what Creative Support actually does and listen to service users and their experiences. It made me feel proud to be working for them and got excited about my job and the journey that lay ahead of me.
I started my Business and Administration NVQ while working as an apprentice for the Marketing Department. I was doing admin duties and in charge of the promotional stock. I worked very close with my colleague Alannah, who worked as a Marketing Officer. She has now left but she taught me most of the things I know today. She sat down with me and taught me the ins and outs of Publisher and design. I started practising making posters and pretend newsletters and realised I had a pretty good set of skills. When I finished my apprenticeship I was taken on full time as a Marketing Administrator and was given the opportunity to complete my Business and Administration NVQ Level 3, which I did.
As I had shown a passion for design I started to create service leaflets, posters and was given the opportunity to be in charge of the Creative Support newsletter! I am now currently Marketing Assistant, I came into Creative Support not knowing a thing about marketing or design and I feel like I have come so far in just 2 years. If you work hard and set your mind to something you can do anything you want. I realised I wanted to swerve away from business and administration and concentrate solely on marketing and I am now studying for my Marketing Diploma and continuing to improve my skills. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my wonderful colleagues or without Creative Support for giving me the opportunities to better myself.
