Celebrating Human Rights Day
People across the globe are set to celebrate Human Rights Day on Saturday 10th December.
The event is held annually on the same date that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted in 1948. The UDHR outlines the broad range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which all men and women are entitled. It also provides the foundation for protecting vulnerable groups such as disabled persons, indigenous peoples and migrant workers. It is the most widely translated document in history, available in over 380 languages and dialects.
In 2011 these issues are especially significant, as many people all around the world organised and protested to demand change and protect their human rights, making headlines during the past twelve months.
