Fundraising Success for Samochima!
As you may have seen in previous news stories, Creative Support staff have been raising funds for the Samochima Pre-school in Botswana. Initially our aim was to raise £500 to pay for the construction of toilets for the boys and girls. These were not only needed for sanitation purposes, but also to help the school fulfil government requirements for registration, thereby helping to secure a wage for the Pre-school teacher and better ensuring the survival of the school.
During our fundraising activities – Toilet Day at head office, Toilet Night in a local public house, charity auction, etc. – we were pleased to discover that we were not alone in our fundraising endeavours for the school. A dedicated friend of the community, Phred Newbury, who lives in the West Midlands, has also raised funds through illustrated talks to various clubs and organisations. We at Creative Support far surpassed our initial aim, raising a fantastic £725.51, and this, along with the money Phred has raised, which has already gone towards the toilets, means we can also pay for the school’s very dilapidated outdoor play area and climbing frame to be replaced, complete the teacher’s toilet and send the teacher on training at the Botshelo Trust in nearby Shakawe. The money has been transferred and the Village Development Committee and PTA are meeting next week to discuss the plans.
All this means that the future of the school and of the children of Samochima is closer to the brightness of the Botswana sun! Thanks to everyone who contributed!
The school has promised to send photos when the work is done, so look out for a follow on story still to come.
