Head Office Globetrotters Victorious!

Creative Support hosted its first ever 5-a-side football fun day tournament in July at the Powerleague Soccerdome in Trafford Park. It was a fantastic event with 24 teams taking part; made up of service users and staff, they came from projects near and far:

• Accrington North End from Accrington
• AFC Masters from Bolton
• The Battlers of Hastings from Chorlton-cum-Hardy
• Blackburn Brasilia from Blackburn
• Cumbrian Cheetahs from south Cumbria
• FC Ormrod from Bury
• The Floaters from Redcar
• HO (Head Office) Globetrotters from Manchester
• Howard Place Harriers from Rochdale
• Lancashire United from Accrington
• Manchester Road Superstars from Audenshaw
• Mottram Road Masters from Hyde
• Nothing Athletic & North Eastern Town from Middlesbrough
• Osborne Rovers & Osborne Road Galaxy from Levenshulme
• Parkside Foxes from Leicester
• Pink Ladies & the T-Birds from Salford
• Radcliffe Town from Radcliffe
• Townley Tigers from Chorley
• Trafford United from Trafford
• UCR All-Stars from Chorlton-cum-Hardy
• Wolverines A & Wolverines B from Wolverhampton

During an action packed 4½ hours we saw some dazzling skills, determined defending and enthusiastic support. It all culminated in 2 exciting semi-finals, as the tension increased with the pressure for each team to reach the final. In the first semi-final HO (Head Office) Globetrotters battled it out with Wolverines B. The match was a close encounter with Wolverines B out muscling HO Globetrotters in the early stages to take a 3-1 lead; but HO Globetrotters fought back with the encouragement of watching fans to take a 6-4 victory. The other semi-final, contested between the Townley Tigers and Cumbrian Cheetahs, was an extremely close encounter. After the 10 scheduled minutes of play the teams couldn’t be separated with the score held at 1-1, following another 2 minutes of extra time the deadlock had still not been broken. The only way to split the two teams was with a nail-biting penalty shoot-out in which the Cumbrian Cheetahs were victorious and progressed to the final.

The final was a cagy affair. Both HO Globetrotters and Cumbrian Cheetahs held strong in defence and goal scoring opportunities were hard to come by. Gary “Cruncher” Caulfield lived up to his nickname by defending solidly, at one point smashing Chris Hindle into the advertising boards in a tackle more like those seen in ice hockey than football; however, it wasn’t enough to put Chris off as he went on to score an amazing solo effort. That goal proved to be the winner as a tiring HO Globetrotters defended gallantly to secure a 1-0 win and become the first ever Creative Support 5-a-side Champions!!!! Congratulations go to the HO Globetrotters: Billy, Chris, Devon, Errol, Gavin and Jonathan.

Everyone retired to the hospitality suite for some much needed refreshment, the raffle and the presentation of the tournament trophies and medals. A very deserving Hayley of the Townley Tigers, who scored 7 goals in one game alone, received the Player of the Tournament trophy. Thirteen year old Nathan Craddock received the Referee of the Tournament trophy, and he played well too! And in the sponsored Keepie Uppies, Errol Williams managed 79 in 2 minutes!

Creative Support would like to thank everyone who assisted in making this event such an enjoyable success; it really wouldn’t have been possible without their help, especially the organisers, Gavin Worrall and Errol Williams. We would like to extend particular thanks to our Chairperson, Martin Igoe MBE, and Joel Goonan, local actor, for being part of the Presentation Team; to all our sponsors and those who advertised in the programme; to the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for providing the bibs and City in the Community (CITC) for providing the footballs; as well as all the staff and service users who came along to cheer on the teams and create a great atmosphere! And finally and most importantly, to all the players who took part in the event! We look forward to your return next year and to seeing which, if any, team will topple the HO Globetrotters from their champion spot!

We are pleased to report that through sponsorship, advertising fees, the raffle and donations, Creative Support raised £500 for our corporate charity, WaterAid!
